While we all wait for DocFest 2025, we can join together in celebrating Canadian Films and Filmmakers for National Canadian Film Day. That’s right, this amazing day is back again this April 17th and it’s bringing more than 1,000 screenings, in every province and territory, and in more than 39 countries around the world! You can learn more about this movement from REEL Canada on their website https://canfilmday.ca/.
Each year we like to highlight a FREE documentary for you to enjoy, and our recommendation this year is Star Wars Kid: The Rise of the Digital Shadows. This NFB film was part of our 2023 festival line up and we loved it so much that we screened it again as our Student Screening Event in 2024. The film was chosen for its important and timely messages, including pop culture ethics, online bullying, and internet and social media literacy.
The Friends of the Library sponsored our Student Screening this past February at the Empire Theatre. Over 400 local students in grades 7 & 8 got a chance to see this film and participate in a live Q&A with the filmmaker, Mathieu Fournier.
