The Day Iceland Stood Still

9:30 AM – Sunday, February 23, 2025 – Belleville Public Library

“On October 24, 1975, 90% of Icelandic women went on strike leaving their homes and jobs to protest the substantial wage gap between women and men.

As men scrambled to manage at home and at work, the strike won widespread recognition for wage discrepancy in the country.

The film reconstructs the 1975 events through archival footage, animation, and interviews with strike participants whose protest started Iceland on a path to be today’s world leader in wage parity.

“…that unforgettable day steered the country towards a brighter future…”, Davide Abbatescianni, Cineuropa
