How to fund your film
The basics of budgeting for docs
Festival and distribution strategies

October 20, 7:00-8:30 pm – Intro to Doc Budgeting
October 27, 7:00 – 8:30 pm – Intro to Doc Distribution

What do these workshops consist of?

Workshop 1 will focus on demystifying the fundraising process in documentary, by focusing on two common questions that first-time filmmakers ask:

a) Where does the money come from?
b) How do you get it?

Workshop 2 will focus on demystifying the budgeting process through a three-step process:

a) Create a list of budget assumptions
b) Use the Telefilm template and estimate costs
c) Take it to the end

Workshop 3 will focus on demystifying the distribution process, and then move into some specific information on film festivals, which is often the first step in the release of a documentary. We will focus on:

a) Identifying your audience
b) Understanding rights, territories and markets
c) Strategizing your festival release

Participants will receive copies of the PowerPoint, templates, and handouts at the end of the session.

Following these professional workshops, region-specific meetups will be held.

November 2, 7:00-8:00 pm – Eastern Ontario
November 4, 7:00 – 8:00 pm – Southwestern Ontario
November 5, 7:00 – 8:00 pm – Northern Ontario

These intimate meetup sessions will focus on introducing participants to local resources – including our festival partners in each area, respectively – and facilitating networking and community-building between filmmakers.

This program is a great refresher for new and emerging producer, filmmakers looking to refresh producing basic, and individuals transitioning into the documentary industry.

DOC Institute strives to serve the needs of the Ontario documentary film community, and it is our goal to expand and create greater access to our professional development programming.
